Orthodontic Emergency Care
Even with the best care, accidents can happen. At Studio City Orthodontist, we want you to feel confident knowing that if an orthodontic emergency occurs, we are here to guide you. Most orthodontic issues are not true emergencies and can be managed at home until you visit our office. However, some situations may require immediate professional attention. Understanding what qualifies as an orthodontic emergency and how to respond can help you stay calm and protect your smile.
Types of Orthodontic Emergencies
Orthodontic emergencies usually fall into two main categories:
Emergencies related to braces or orthodontic appliances
Direct injuries to the mouth, teeth, or jaw
Knowing the difference will help you decide what to do next.
Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
Sometimes, braces or appliances can loosen, break, or cause irritation. While these situations can feel uncomfortable, they are rarely dangerous. Here are some quick fixes you can try at home until you can be seen by Dr. Oscar Reyna-Blanco:
Irritating tie wire – Cover the area with orthodontic wax or gently tuck the wire under the archwire using a clean pencil eraser or cotton swab.
Loose band or bracket – Leave it in place if possible and call our office during patient hours. We will schedule you to have the appliance reattached if needed.
Broken or poking archwire – Try to bend the wire back into place with a pencil eraser. If that doesn’t work, you can carefully clip it with clean nail clippers. Then, contact our office so we can make adjustments.
Important: Please call our office during regular patient hours to schedule an appointment for repairs. Walk-in visits are not available for emergencies, as this would disrupt care for already scheduled patients.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth
If you experience a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, whether or not you are in orthodontic treatment, take the following steps:
Apply ice immediately to reduce swelling.
Contact your general dentist right away. Dental injuries often require X-rays to evaluate the extent of damage.
If a tooth has been dislodged, fractured, or knocked out, your dentist is the best first call since they have the tools and anesthesia needed for urgent treatment.
Once your dentist has addressed the injury, call our office so we can adjust or repair your orthodontic appliances as needed.
After-Hours Orthodontic Emergencies
If a situation arises outside of office hours and you are in significant pain, call our office and follow the instructions provided. Our recorded message will guide you on who to contact for further assistance. Your comfort and safety are our top priorities.
